How Fast the First Two Years Go: Reflections Before My Son Turns Two

If someone had told me just how fast the first two years of motherhood would fly by, I’m not sure I would have believed them.

Of course, when you’re pregnant or holding a newborn, people say it all the time.

“Enjoy every moment.” “It goes so fast.” “They grow up before you know it.”

At the time, it almost feels like something people just say. In those early months, when you’re tired and adjusting to a brand new life with a baby, time can feel slow and overwhelming.

But now, as my son approaches his second birthday, I finally understand exactly what they meant.

From Baby to Toddler in the Blink of an Eye

One moment I was bringing him home from the hospital with that tiny newborn hat and hospital bracelet. The next moment he was learning to crawl, pulling himself up, and taking those wobbly first steps.

And now?

  • He’s talking.

  • He’s running.

  • He has opinions.

Somehow my little baby has become a toddler with a personality all his own.

It’s incredible to watch.

Watching Them Learn the World

One of the most fascinating parts of the toddler stage is watching how quickly they learn.

Every day feels like something new:

  • a new word

  • a new skill

  • a new curiosity about the world

Sometimes I just sit and watch him play, thinking about how much he has grown in such a short time. The way his brain is constantly learning and developing is truly amazing.

It makes you realize how precious these early years really are.

The Moments You Wish You Could Freeze

As moms, we often look back and wish we had slowed down more.

The cuddles before bedtime. The tiny hands reaching for you. The way they say certain words for the first time.

These are the moments that don’t last forever, but they stay with you.

And while we can’t stop time, we can try to capture it.

Photos, videos, and little keepsakes help preserve those memories so we can look back and remember just how special these years were.

Motherhood Changes You Too

Something else I didn’t expect over these first two years was how much motherhood would change me.

Your priorities shift. Your heart grows in ways you never imagined. And suddenly the smallest moments feel like the biggest milestones.

Motherhood is beautiful, exhausting, emotional, and joyful all at the same time.

A Reminder for Moms in This Season

If you’re in the middle of the baby or toddler stage right now, this is your gentle reminder:

Slow down when you can.

Take the pictures. Record the videos. Write down the funny little things they say.

Because one day you’ll look back and realize those little moments were actually the big ones.

And just like that… two years will have passed.

From one mama to another — soak it in.
